Musical Mondays | All Time Favorites

Before I start this post, I would like to apologize for the lack of posts since my first one. However, I do have 3 posts coming out (hopefully) within the next week and a post I'm quite hesitant to publish. I am also going to try and do a weekly "Musical Monday" post, where I can share songs that I have been listening to quite obsessively. Each week, the list will be centered around certain themes, such as nostalgia or happy music.

So, today's song list is comprised of my all time favorite songs. Yay!

-Before I get to the music, please be respectful of other people's tastes. Not everyone is the same, not everyone has to like the same thing as you. To some people, music can be the most important thing to them, and not as important to others. Before you criticize, listen to the music, listen to the lyrics, and understand why it means so much to them. Thank you.

"Winter Winds" by Mumford and Sons

I discovered this song on June 5 on my Kairos* Retreat, but I'm fairly certain I've heard this song before that. Anyways, I just love this song; the lyrics, the meaning, the music, everything about it is perfect. Listening to it on Kairos just makes it even more perfect. I love listening to this song, especially since it became irreplaceable to my Kairos and it always brings back amazing memories from that wonderful time.

And my head told my heart / “Let love grow” /
But my heart told my head / “This time no /
Yes, my heart told my head / “This time no /

"Demons" by Imagine Dragons

This is a song I hold close to me, as I have spent many a nights listening to it (amongst others^) and it just evokes this feeling inside me that I can't really describe.

I wanna hide the truth /
I wanna shelter you /
But with the beast inside /
There’s nowhere we can hide /

"It's Time" by Imagine Dragons

Besides being the main song from Perks of Being A Wallflower, this song is one of my favorites because of its unique instrumental and vocal qualities, as well as lyrics that mean a great deal to me. This song gives me such a wake up call when I'm not feeling like myself or the world comes crumbling down on me and it just reinvigorates me.

The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell /
Right to the top / Don’t look back /

"Big Jet Plane" by Angus & Julia Stone

I'll be honest - I don't know why this is my favorite song. It has limited lyrics and simple sounds, but it all comes together in something that is way more than its parts. I guess it's just its calming ability or the way I feel listening to it with my eyes closed at night, but it's definitely a song that I don't get tired listening to.

She said “Hello Mister, pleased to meet ya” /
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her /
She smelled of daisies, she smelled of daisies /
She drive me crazy, she drive me crazy /

"Serial Killer" by Lana Del Rey

Judge me. I really do like this song, and I don't care how strange it is. Honestly, I prefer Lana pre Born to Die, including songs like "Hollywood's Dead", "Hit and Run", or "Fake Diamond". These songs were recorded before 2012 and weren't intended to be included in albums. I don't know why I like this song, but I just prefer it to her newer songs and I love her vocals and the music in this particular song.

Baby, I’m a sociopath, /

Sweet serial killer /
On the warpath /
Cause I love just a little too much /

"Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Rey
This is, for me, the quintessential Lana Del Rey song. It perfectly highlights the aspects of Lana that I love the most: haunting, intoxicating vocals, sombering music, and a perfect combination of vintage/retro and modern sounds and lyrics.

I’ve seen the world, lit it up /
As my stage now /
Channeling angels in the new age now /
Hot summer days, rock ‘n’ roll /
The way you play for me at your show /
And all the ways I get to know /
Your pretty face and electric soul /

"Lolita" by The Veronicas

I was introduced to The Veronicas by a friend (again, I'm pretty sure I've listened to their music before) and even though I really like a lot of their songs (i.e. "Revenge is Sweeter Than You Ever Were), this song is quite unique and demonstrates masterful manipulation of various sounds. The vocals are perfect for the music and vice versa, and everything works well together.

Doomed from the start, we can’t stay apart /
Everywhere I turn I’m trapped in your heart /
There’s no escape, secrets keep you awake /
No running away, no saving the day /
Wild and exciting I’m breaking you down /
You’re making a comeback, I’m taking your crown

"Human" by Ellie Goulding

This song is arguably the least popular of Ellie's songs from her album but I honestly don't understand why that is. It really makes you think about life and reflect on human nature. Ellie has a great voice obviously demonstrated in all her songs, but the meaning of this song is what catapulted it into my favorites.

I am so scared of what will kill me in the end /
For I am not prepared /
I hope I will get the chance to be someone /
To be human /
Look what we’ve done, look what we’ve done /
I would give my life, to be human /
